Topic Summary:

Beginning in March of 2026, Cst Mason with Edmonton Police Service partnered with the Vancouver Resident Office of the United States Secret Service in a joint operation that would later come to be known as Operation Maple Star.  Soon thereafter, another partner agency, the Collin County Sheriff’s Office in Texas, joined the operation.  The operation focuses on using live, in-progress scam intelligence provided by a network of highly skilled ethical hackers.

Learning Objectives:

    1. Recognize the connections between individual fraud cases and transnational organized crime networks, including how seemingly isolated scams can be linked to larger criminal enterprises.

    2. Explain the importance of strategic partnerships and intelligence sharing among law enforcement agencies, ethical hackers, and international partners in identifying, investigating, and disrupting large-scale scam operations.

    3. Identify innovative investigative techniques and collaborative approaches used in Operation Maple Star, including the exploitation of real-time scam intelligence to trace criminal activity, identify perpetrators, and support enforcement actions.

    Speaker Bio:

Brian Mason is a constable and fraud investigator with the Edmonton Police Service, with 16 years of experience in emergency services, specializing in large- scale scam operations and cyber-enabled crime.  He is currently the coordinator for Operation Maple Star, a joint operation with the United States Secret Service.

In 2020, Brian began to take small-scale frauds and investigate them as only a small snippet of a much larger environment.  Developing relationships worldwide and collaborative efforts with other agencies, Brian began to establish linkages of single-reporter scams into a larger network and the source of the scams, establishing their direct association with transnational organized crime.  Continuing, he developed skill sets in organized crime syndicate activities, cybercrime, cybersecurity, financial analysis, and cryptocurrency tracing.   This culminated to eventually launching Operation Maple Star in 2026.

Brian has presented locally and internationally on frauds and the risk of the growth and impact of scams globally.  He is currently a consultant on scam investigations for agencies across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and India, as well as a Subject Matter Expert for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on Cyber-Enabled Crime and Cryptocurrency Investigations.
